Acupuncture and Fertility Enhancement

Acupuncture and traditional Chinese herbal medicine have had many years of success in assisting fertility. As stand alone modalities, acupuncture and Chinese herbal formulas have had great success in treating difficult conception. Current studies in the US and Europe are yielding very promising results for both males and females. Acupuncture Has Fertility Boosting Benefits, Acupuncture Improves Fertility in Men, Too, Effect or Acupuncture on Sperm Parameters.

Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine incorporate thousands of years of clinical study, observation, and treatment of difficult conception. In the last 40 years with the introduction of Traditional Chinese Medicine into Europe and North America, we have seen an exponential increase in interest and studies pointing to the efficacy of this medicine in treating a variety of imbalances/illnesses ranging from depression to chronic and acute pain to infertility.

Acupuncture and herbal medicine can assist conception in the following ways:

  • Improve the function of the ovaries to produce higher quality eggs;
  • Regulate the hormones to produce a larger number of follicles;
  • Increase blood flow to the uterus and increase the uterine lining;
  • Improve sperm volume, count, motility and morphology;
  • Strengthen the immune system;
  • Decrease stress;
  • Increase the chance of conceiving;
  • Decrease the chance of a miscarriage

What Is the Protocol for Enhancing Fertility?
Although there is no one protocol for everyone, a generic scenario is possible when one is using acupuncture and herbal medicine alone to enhance conception.

For the woman this generally involves 4 – 6 acupuncture treatments per month along with herbal formulas , if the client chooses, that are usually taken twice a day. This is a three to four month process, but may take longer depending on the imbalances involved. During this time acupuncture and herbal formulas are used to regulate and smooth the menstrual cycle, improve the function of the ovaries, increase blood flow to the uterus, regulate the hormones to produce a larger number of follicles, reduce stress and to address imbalances such as endometriosis, ovarian cysts, and high FSH. Changes in diet and supplements may be suggested.

For the male, a three to four month course of acupuncture, 2 to 4 times per month, and supplements, is recommended. Given that it takes 100 days for sperm to develop (74 to form and 20-30 to mature), this is a reasonable time span. Issues such as sperm quality, quantity, motility, morphology, and stress will be addressed at this time.
